I Can’t Get Enough of Creative Advertisements

I am a self-proclaimed advertising nerd. I love to watch and analyze ads, specifically commercials. Granted most ads are not well done, but the ones that are, are a form of entertainment. A well-done ad is memorable; it grabs your attention and you not only remember the ad but also the brand. A high budget commercial doesn’t automatically make it great. In fact, one of my favorite ads, “Dollar Shave Club” is a viral video that had a very low production budget. (If you haven’t seen it, go look it up on youtube) A lot of times in advertising, creativity beats out budget.

The following are some highly entertaining ads, that also happen to be some of my favorites:

  • Hands down, my favorite commercial from the 2013 Super Bowl, was Budweiser’s Clydesdale ad. It was sentimental and tugged on your heartstrings just the right amount. This commercial told a story and there is no shame in shedding a few tears while watching it.

  • “Coke Zero: Unlock The 007 In You. You Have 70 Seconds.” Is. So. Cool. Coke sends you on your own 007 mission and puts obstacles in your way to up the ante. This campaign is out-of-the-box thinking that leaves you just saying, “wow!” It also leaves you wishing that you were a secret agent.

  • “TNT: A Dramatic Surprise on a Quiet Square” is another really creative guerrilla stunt. TNT’s slogan is “we know drama,” so in this stunt, they add some drama to ordinary people’s everyday lives. I don’t know about you, but if I, unsuspectingly, stumbled across this, I would be beyond startled/perplexed/terrified. Though, watching it from the safety of my computer, it’s pretty darn cool.

  • I had to throw in this oldie-but-goody. “The Force” by Volkswagen just makes you smile. In this ad, “Darth Vadar” is trolling around the house trying to use “The Force” on various objects. The entire time, at least I am, hoping that using “The Force” will work for him. I don’t think I’ve ever rooted for Darth Vadar before.

These are just a few of my favorite ads, believe me, there are many more. We love to complain about commercials, but they really are a form of entertainment when done well.
